    Shipping capacity has been in oversupply for more than a decade – not an easy time for a service-oriented shipping line like A.P. Moller-Maersk. In response Maersk started offering something that is always in short supply: Smart financing for exporters. A model that could change the game for many export items. We wanted to know how it started, how it works and how nut exporters are responding.

    In the last 20 years banks have shown little interest in offering new services and solutions. They have been slow and reluctant to adapt to new technologies and ignorant about many sectors of the economy and their changing requirements.

    Specifically, emerging economies and small business owners have often been ignored. But while emerging countries have since ‘emerged’ many businesses have learned to use other sources of financing – or they have inspired a new breed of banks and financial transaction services. The export of agricultural goods is challenging for small and mid-size companies because it takes a long time to get paid: It is a long journey from the tree to the retail store and payments within the supply chain tend to take long because of paperwork requirements or harsh payment terms. Exporters and growers sometimes have to wait for an unbearable amount of time. Now times are changing. One of the companies filling the void is A.P. Moller-Maersk. I talked to Benjamin Hadfield – Country Manager, Singapore about new ways of financing overseas business with Maersk Trade Finance.
