PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has informed the House that the State government is promoting the cashew plantation rejuvenation scheme under the National Horticulture Mission (NHM) implemented by Agriculture Department. Replying to a question tabled by Opposition Leader and Congress’ Quepem MLA Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavalekar, the Chief Minister said, “As per the scheme, the farmers have to plant cashew grafts only of high yielding varieties. Farmers purchase and plant the cashew grafts for which assistance under this scheme is extended by Agriculture Department”. He said, “In cashew plantation, some trees are attacked by stem borer. However, no data is available regarding the spread of borer attack in the adjoining private cashew plantations from the cashew plantations managed by Goa Forest Development Corporation (GFDC).”
In the cashew plantations managed by GFDC, he said, efforts are made to remove the larvae of stem borer by scrapping the external bark and the scrapped area is covered with the mixture of lime and fungicide. “The Directorate of Agriculture through its schemes and initiatives has been making efforts to control these pests as assistance up to 75 per cent of cost towards purchase of pesticides, fungicides, bio-control agents, maximum up to Rs 4,500 per ha limited to Rs 18,000 or 4 ha per beneficiary is provided under State Sector Scheme Crop Production Input Management,” he said. The Chief Minister, who also the holds the forest portfolio, informed that a special programme was taken up in Sattari taluka under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) for management of root and stem borer pest in cashew in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
